For the past month, I have been doing what you all are going to be doing this week: searching for a topic, an approach, the courage and confidence to write something. I have berated myself for starting with a nature essay. I have covered my eyes and shaken my head and said, "I can't write a frippin nature essay. I'm no good at that and I never have been! I'll get someone else to write a damn sample essay!"
But even as I say that, my worry about writing this sample has sensitized me. Everything looks different and has looked different since May 15 when I began worrying about ENG 262. The garden dirt, the weeds there, the taste of the asparagus I cut, the sound of a turkey breaking cover, the sight of a doe running across a field in the dusk light, the dogs writhing on their backs in the grass, the snaking vines grounding my electric wire, the lupines I've started by the roadside, the faint smell of the pasture roses, a horse drinking from running water after the rains--everything I see makes me wonder if I have a sample-essay topic here!
Maybe I'm slowly closing in on one!
